I think that a larger problem with Wikinews, however, is that it simply summarizes information that can be gotten easily elsewhere. The majority of the articles are summaries of the AP, NYT, and other major outlets. On wikipedia, there is a wealth of information that it would take me much more time to collect. As a result, Wikinews has less viewer which leads to less contributors which reinforces the cycle that they need to break out of.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8679726462322319620.post-33790633061393972362009-10-10T18:10:54.984-04:002009-10-10T18:10:54.984-04:00Mechanical engineering also has the concept of equ...Mechanical engineering also has the concept of equilibrium. there it come in three flavours - stable equilibrium, Unstable equilibrium and neutral equilibrium.
A golf ball in a bowl has stable equilibrium. Jog it and it will roll around for a while but it will always go back to the bottom of the bowl.
A golf ball balanced on top of a beach ball has unstable equilibrium. Jog it even a little and it will roll away from the equilibrium point and never come back.
Neutral equilibrium is a golf ball on a flat plane - no one location is preferred over any other.

Wikipedia appears to be in stable equilibrium. It is easier to fix vandalism than it is to cause it. It is easier to get your way in an edit war if you are reasonable and cooperative than if you are unreasonable. The forces are not finely balanced, On the contrary they are heavily weighted in favour of those trying to create a NPOV encyclopedia.Filceolairehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11115008796905710763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8679726462322319620.post-62914766587152213762009-08-26T04:00:23.278-04:002009-08-26T04:00:23.278-04:00Flagged pose an essential problem : the one valida...Flagged pose an essential problem : the one validating an edit (as in making it visible on the site) become kind of juridically responsible of it. The US Senate editing articles to place themselves in a better light, is no different than this case.

It just seems since a church's IP address was blocked, well WP is somehow infringing their "freedom of speech", which well, doesn't exist on Wikipedia. If it did, then NPOV, COI, etc policies would not exist; because they all restrict "freedom of speech".

If scientologist still want to edit wikipedia, they are welcome to, from their house. Conflicts of interest are not a significant problem unless they cause users to violate other policies like "neutral point of view", in which case the conflict of interest merely exacerbates the issue. The block is alike one of open proxies because the problem is the same: users on Scientology IP addresses can't be distinguished from one another easily. Were it simple to identify unique users, the widely-misinterpreted general IP block on Scientology computers would not be so necessary.nihiltreshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00079913991767893265noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8679726462322319620.post-12849585836229741092009-06-01T19:47:23.257-04:002009-06-01T19:47:23.257-04:00As a former member of that cult, subject to their ...As a former member of that cult, subject to their "fair game" policies, I applaud Wikipedia for their decision. I'd suggest that if they subsequently decide to reverse it, then they should also reverse their decision to block the opposite side of the debate -- Perhaps reserve a section especially for debate on the subject and just let the two sides fight it out. When members of the cult are caught in the act of being themselves, all will be revealed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8679726462322319620.post-19983249435717663202009-06-01T18:48:43.198-04:002009-06-01T18:48:43.198-04:00Personally, I think that the blocks on the IP addr...Personally, I think that the blocks on the IP addresses are being blown extremely out of proportion by the media. Out of all the articles I've read concerning the block, almost none of them mention that anti-Scientology editors were also sanctioned, or even that editors by name were sanctioned.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8679726462322319620.post-22133450689691071782009-06-01T14:40:37.076-04:002009-06-01T14:40:37.076-04:00I don't know what ArbCom decided to view the block...I don't know what ArbCom decided to view the block as if it were open proxies. Essentially it is a COI based block, and there are already many COI accounts, and IPs that are blocked for the very same reason.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8679726462322319620.post-49734620634934197832009-05-24T17:47:56.041-04:002009-05-24T17:47:56.041-04:00Welcome!
